Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

God didn’t need you. Before the first sunrise, before the first breath, He was whole and complete. And yet He made you anyway. That’s where the Bible begins. With those familiar words, “In the beginning, God created,” we see not only our beginning, but also our purpose, and our value. We’re here because God wanted us. We exist to be part of a story God chose to write.

He wanted us to know Him, love Him, and commune with Him. He wanted us to have a relationship and He wanted to be a blessing in our lives. There is no way around it, we owe everything to God because we’re the product of His imagination, we’re the answer to “what can I do,” we’re the result of thought, preparation, and power.

While there are many verses that speak to our creation, I’d like to discuss two of my favorites briefly. They are Jeremiah 1:5 which says: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;” and Psalm 139:14, which says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Both of these passages speak to the knowledge God has of our creation. The Lord knew Jeremiah before anyone else did (and it seems prudent to believe the same of every single person born prior or since) and the Psalmist knew that God made him uniquely (which once again can be said of all those born prior or since). What those passages do is highlight the circumstances of our creation. It’s not random, arbitrary, or a product of chance. It’s planned, executed, and validated by our Creator.

So what do we do with this? If you’ve ever felt like an accident, unwanted, or like your life doesn’t add up to much, this truth says otherwise. You were known before you were formed, and no circumstance of your birth gets the final word on that.

And if it’s true of you, it’s true of the person next to you too. The same hands that formed you in the womb formed them, which means the “image of God” you carry into every room is also carried by the coworker who annoys you, the stranger you’d rather not help, the person you find hardest to love. This isn’t just a truth to feel good about on your own, it’s something that should change how you treat everyone else who’s just as fearfully and wonderfully made as you are.

Today, I want to implore you to love our Creator because He made us. Love that we are special to Him by our very nature. Love that we are the only part of His creation made “in His image,” (see Genesis 1:26) and love that we were made wonderfully and uniquely on purpose. In the end, love that we were made for no other reason than this, God wanted us to be a part of His existence. The more you dwell on that simple idea, the more I hope you come to love Him and what He did.

He made us.
